Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Everybody Needs Love” by Drive-By Truckers from 2011 album Go-Go Boots on ATO Records.
Less than year after the release of the decidedly rockin’ The Big To-Do, alt-country veterans Drive-By Truckers are back with their ninth studio album Go-Go Boots, which sees the band venturing into more contemplative and thought-provoking territory. Heavy electric riffs and primped-up guitar solos have been replaced by down-tempo acoustic rhythms, melancholy pedal steel, and lyrics that explore the darker side of the band’s songwriting. The result is a collection of songs that might not make up the best Drive-By Truckers album in terms of whiskey-drinking and hell-raising, but one that serves as a versatile showcase of the band’s pure songwriting chops.
Though several of the songs on Go-Go Boots carry a dark and even brutal tone, today’s featured song, “Everybody Needs Love,” sees the acoustically-minded DBT go in a completely different direction with a lighthearted song about that one old standard go-to of country songwriting. Yes, I’m talking about love, and in case you didn’t know, everybody needs it. Backed by contented bass, drums, organ, and some “matter-of-fact” acoustic guitar-play, Patterson Hood evokes the “sun and moon and stars above” as he sings a simple story of the need for love as if in a drunken, blissful stupor. The song is brought home in a rousing fashion with Hood riffing vocally along with a chorus of gospel harmonies that breezily fade away as the song ends.
DBT are currently touring the country with Heartless Bastards in support of Go-Go Boots and will be by the Showbox at the Market on Saturday, March 12.
