Thursday News Roundup

RIP Mike Starr

  • RIP Mike Starr. The Alice In Chains bassist died on Tuesday from unknown causes. He was 44.

  • Local hip hop duo Shabazz Palaces made news when they signed to Sub Pop last year. A new album in 2011 was all but a given, and now we have a title and release date. Black Up will hit it the shelves on May 31. But you can download “An Echo From the Hosts that Profess Infinitum” now:

  • In the vein of the Tom Scharpling videos for Ted Leo and the Pharmacists and The New Pornographers, Daily Show writer Scott Jacobson has directed a humorous look at “Conversation 16″ by lovable mopesters The National. The video stars sometime Daily Show guest and comedian Kristen Schaal as the President of the U.S., Mad Men‘s John Slattery as her lovelorn Secret Service agent, and James Urbaniak as a Russian dignitary and her love interest.

  • Though the White Stripes are no more, Jack White still cannot be stopped. He has clearly been relishing running his own record label in Third Man Records, and has shown that he’s not afraid to take a few chances or try out a gimmick or two. First it was the Triple Decker Record, and now it’s the Rolling Record Store. Behold:

  • British minimalist sensation James Blake recently announced a slew of upcoming tour dates. He’ll be in Seattle on May 19 playing...The Tractor Tavern? Maybe an odd venue for an avant-garde Brit to play in, but he’ll be here nevertheless. For a complete list of Blake’s upcoming dates, click here.
  • And finally, here’s a brand new Yuck video for their song “Get Away” from their stellar self-titled debut album. Yuck will be playing an exclusive set for KEXP during SXSW at Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop on Wednesday, March 16 at 2:30 pm Austin time (that’s 12:30 pm PST). For a complete list of performances from Mellow Johnny’s that will be airing on KEXP, click here. Don’t forget to tune in!
