Riot Grrrl aficionados Sleater-Kinney may be a half decade defunct, but two-thirds of the band are back and ready for action. Drummer Janet Weiss and lead guitarist Carrie Brownstein have united with The Minders‘ Rebecca Cole and Helium‘s Mary Timony to form a veritable supergroup in Wild Flag. The band started touring last November, building steady buzz around their frenetic, feral stage presence, and are set to release their debut album on Merge later this year. The band’s official biography is short and strange: “What is the sound of an avalanche taking out a dolphin? What do get when you cross a hamburger with a hot dog? The answer is: WILD FLAG.” But the energy and passion for music is all there, as the disparate punk-rockers take their spirited tunes to new levels as a cohesive whole.
