Review Revue: Young MC - Stone Cold Rhymin’

Ah, now this is the music of my youth! And not something I would necessarily have expected the cutting-edge DJs at KCMU to be into, but I guess they latched onto it long before “Bust a Move” was the ubiquitous hit it became (which I’m sure ultimately earned it a white dot, though there’s no mention of that here).

It just goes to show that even the notoriously snooty likes of college radio DJs, people who heap praise on artists such as Genesis P. Orridge, Swans, Jandek, and the Residents, will fall head over heels for the right mix of beats, hooks, and rhymes.=

“NNNBT 9-5-89″

“Low down funky west coast soundin’ not as loopy as Tone Loc but cool as all get out.”

“Smooooth... but what an ego! Each song is about him... give me a break!”

“Young MC is absolutely, positively cool. Not a bad track on this thing. Plus, he’s got a college education!”

“Why should you care?”

“‘Principal’s Office’ is hilarious!”

“Yeah, he’s good, but he’s been in H an awful long time. How about giving Big Daddy Kane a chance?”
