THE DODOS with Reading Rainbow @ Neumos

Bay Area indie rockers The Dodos will kick off the week at Neumos. Their music plays is folky, tribal, tom-heavy, and African-inspired and has been all the rage around KEXP as of late. They’ll be playing a live in-studio set at noon on the day of the show. Here’s “Black Night,” off their recently released album No Color, which was recently KEXP’s Song of the Day:

BAND OF HEATHENS with Jack Wilson @ Tractor Tavern

Austin band…Band of Heathens play twangy country that, unlike several local bands springing up lately, does not have an indie or folksy slant to it; their music is straight up Southern country, through and through. It’s no surprise that this show will be taking place under the boots at the Tractor, and any Texas ex-pats in attendance will think they’re right back in Austin. (8 pm, $10, 21+)

Tuesday, April 5

THE BASEBALL PROJECT with The Minus 5, Steve Wynn @ Tractor Tavern

You’d probably assume that The Baseball Project would fall in line with indie bands like Sports, Tennis, Tennis Pro, and Modern Athletics in that their sports-related name really has nothing to do with the music they play. You would assume wrong, however, as The Baseball Project actually sing songs about baseball. The project of Steve Wynn and Scott McCaughey, The Baseball Project’s songs focus on the likes of Willie Mays, Harvey Haddix, and other elements from baseball’s storied history. It’s odd to hear a mixture of sports and music that is actually GOOD and not just a cheesy novelty, but it’s hard not to appreciate what Wynn and MCCaughey are doing, especially if you’re a fan of the game. If you’re still skeptical, they’ll be playing live in-studio on KEXP at 3pm on the day of the show. (8 pm, $15, 21+)

Tuesday will be the first of a three-night stay at Jazz Alley for Cuban band Juan De Marcos & The Afro-Cuban All Stars. If wandering what Cuban music is, think Buena Vista Social Club. If you’re still confused, look it up. Or you can tune into the Best Ambiance with Jon Kertzer on Monday night to hear an interview with Juan de Marcos at 7:00 pm. ($35)

Here are James’s recaps: DAY 1, DAY 2, DAY 3, DAY 4 & 5, DAY 6, DAY 7, DAY 8 & 9, DAY 10, 11, 12, & 13. (8 pm, $10, 21+)

The album is full of soulful, salacious, good-time funk that will make for a perfect occasion to get down. Tennessee all-female three-some Those Darlins are worth getting there early for. (8 pm, $15, 21+)
