Singer/songwriter Jessica Lea Mayfield specializes in a mournful blend of folk rock and alt-country, with songs that are as moving as they are rustic. Songs like “Kiss Me Again” call to mind Midwest farms and sprawling countryside, without losing the intimate feel of a a dimly lit dive bar. She began playing music as early as age 8 with her family’s bluegrass outfit One Way Rider, but quickly moved into a more rock-based territory, citing Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) as one of her major artistic influences. Her debut album With Blasphemy So Heartfelt garnered critical acclaim and a loyal fan following, as her songs of heartbreak and emotional despair gained confluence with the masses via TV spots and Starbucks compilations. But live, Mayfield is filled out by a full band, adding new life and invigoration to songs that already reek of spirit and splendor. KEXP had the distinct pleasure of documenting her remarkable live set at Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop at this year’s South By Southwest. Below, you’ll find haunting and memorable video of the event. Enjoy.
