Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show Host Cheryl Waters, is “Analog Woodland Song” by Viva Voce from their release The Future Will Destroy You available on June 21st from Vanguard Records.
Today’s featured song gives a taste of what’s to come from Portland duo Kevin and Anita Robinson aka Viva Voce. It comes from their forthcoming release, The Future Will Destroy You, which marks the band’s 5th studio album and first for Vanguard Records (who they worked with on their side project Blue Giant). The Robinson’s have been steadily building their fan base since 1998 when they began self-releasing their albums on their own label “Amore! Phonics they have also had releases from Cadence, Asthmatic Kitty, Minty Fresh, and Barsuk but seem to feel a special affinity for the Los Angeles based label.
“Viva Voce will continue to record, produce albums and tour until a force majeure keeps us from doing so. It is our great joy to now finally be on a label that has a history and lineage to match. We’re lifers and it feels good to finally be at home.” — Kevin Robinson
Whatever label they call home, they can be counted on to produce quiet burning psych-tinged rock with lots of fuzzy guitar sounds (though they mostly perform as a duo they have had additional musicians join them live) and harmonies that reflect the comfort this husband and wife team have with one another.
Fresh off a tour with Damien Jurado, there’s not a lot on the calendar right now for Viva Voce. The Future Will Destroy You hits stores in June so there will likely be shows in Seattle and Portland to support the release but until then, those who live in the Portland area and either have children or like being around children can catch them at the final You Who show of the season on May 22nd at the McMennamin’s Kennedy School. Keep a peeper on their website for more information.
