Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Morning Show Host John Richards, is “Sleeping Children Are Still” by Blue Sky Black Death from their album Noir available from Fake Four Inc.
Blue Sky Black Death are the instrumental production duo of Kingston (Maguine) and Ian “Young God” Taggart who hail from Seattle and San Fransico (respectively) and who offer up a track from their latest effort Noir, which is the highly anticipated follow up to their 2008 release Late Night Cinema. Despite the allusions of darkness in their names and titles, BSBD (which is a skydiving term meaning “enjoy the blue sky around your but don’t forget the black earth below”) seem to focus on the beauty in their work. The fusion of ambient instrumentals (a la Album Leaf) and underground hip hop beats and sensibilities (they’ve collaborated with Wu Tang Clan’s Hell Razah and Holocaust among other notable underground hip hop artists) combine to create lush cinematic sounds that would be appropriate in a concert hall or the club.
You can catch Blue Sky Black Death kicking things off at The Crocodile on May 15th with Cunninlyngists, whom they’ll be touring with during the greater part of this month. There’s not a lot of info on their Myspace page and they don’t have a working website, but their label’s website does have all their tour information. In the meantime, here is BSBD & Hell Razah featuring Crooked I with “Halos”:
