Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “What About Us” by Handsome Furs from their release Sound Kapital out June 28th on Sub Pop.
Montreal-based duo Handsome Furs have their roots firmly implanted in indie rock, so it’s surprising that the band’s first single from their forthcoming Sound Kapital has a total lack of guitars. What’s perhaps more surprising is that the transition is unbelievably smooth – the Furs have mastered punk-infused electropop, merging copious New Order-esque synthesizers and drum machines with James Murphy-style off-the-cuff vocal delivery. If lead single “What About Us” is any indication, Kapital, the Handsome Furs’ third album, is going to bring the group to even bigger heights.
The husband-wife duo of Dan Boeckner (also of Wolf Parade) and Alexei Perry broke onto the scene in 2007, opening for acts like Modest Mouse before their debut Plague Park was even released. They have seen much of Europe and Asia, and this wanderlust quality permeates their music, making every track a sonic exploration. Each release following has occupied different sonic territory, and the upcoming Kapital is no exception. Handsome Furs may just find themselves lumped along with acts like Holy Ghost! and YACHT, both of whom have electro-infused full-lengths dropping this year. It’s different company, but perhaps that’s what makes Handsom Furs so unique — they’re never content to do the same thing, in the same place, twice. For contrast, here they are performing “All We Want, Baby” from their 2009 album, Face Control:
Currently, Dan and Alexei are touring Europe. They’re recently done a few short U.S. tours and one-offs, but they’ll most likely follow the new album with an official tour not too long from now. You can keep up with their schedule on their MySpace page and on the Wolf Parade website. (Dan and Alexei, by the way, promise a new Handsome Furs website soon.)
