Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters is “Modern Art” by Black Lips from the 2011 album Arabia Mountain on Vice.
Black Lips – Modern Art (MP3)
One of Atlanta’s coolest Rock and Roll bands of recent memory has got to be Black Lips. On the heels of their sixth studio album, Arabia Mountain, the band is obviously no newcomer to the rock and roll scene (and to KEXP listeners). Enlisting the help of famous producer Mark Ronson on their latest album, it’s a grown up make over of their previous material and a perfect opportunity to give this band another listen. Formed in 1999, the group gets the gritty, booze-fueled, Garage Rock label thrown at them quite often, and probably with good reason. Their music has definitely evolved over the years, yet somehow without losing that trademark raucous sound the band is known for. They’ve also been known for some well documented on-stage antics in the past, but even the band has admitted they’ve calmed down just a little bit over the years. No matter what obstacles have stood in their path, these guys just persist in getting better. With such a strong connection between performer and audience, it’s no wonder their performances elicit these types of responses.
Black Lips new album Arabia Mountain will be available in stores on June 7th. Limited edition vinyl will contain a 7″ with two additional songs and marble vinyl on the 12″. The band is currently touring Europe throughout May and then w/Cerebal Ballzy. You can read more about Black Lips on their website.
