Local Seattle quintet Yuni in Taxco borrow from many diverse influences, from Beach Boys-esque surf pop/rock and Brazilian world rhythms. KEXP soon fell in love with the band’s summery grooves, but the band has also made a splash in Europe with Portuguese upstart label Cakes & Tapes, who oversaw the international release of their debut EP. Their first full-length, Sanpaku was released via the band’s Bandcamp for free on the 18th of February, 2011. The collection calls to mind palm trees, sunlit beaches, margaritas and campfires without being trite or cloying. Standout tracks like “What Love Will Provide” and “Neutral Currents” are the perfect soundtrack to a relaxing afternoon.
And it’s just about to become a relaxing afternoon here at the Sunset Tavern in Ballard. The sun’s out, cupcakes and coffee are flowing, and KEXP listeners are bringing their friends and families to enjoy the free music. Yuni in Taxco’s set was like warm breeze through the barroom.
