KEXP Ballard Day @ Sunset Tavern: Joan as Police Woman

photos by Dave Lichterman

Joan Wasser, better known as Joan As Police Woman, has a long and storied past. Despite playing music since age six, it wasn’t until 2004 that she struck out on her own, forming her own project. After years alongside such musical luminaries as Mary Timony, Chris Dowd (Fishbone), and Antony and the Johnsons, Wasser finally created Joan As Police Woman. Singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright quickly recruited her to join his band and tour extensively, debuting her new material as an opener for his tour. 2005 saw Wasser signing a distribution deal with Reveal Records, a British indie label that oversaw the release of her debut LP, Real Life.

2011 sees the return of Joan As Police Woman, with The Deep Field, her first new album of original material since 2008. On her new songs, Joan embarks on a journey of sultry melodies and jazzy hooks that sparkles with the sheen of crisp production without sacrificing emotional impact.

And what an emotional impact her performance at the Sunset Tavern in Ballard had! Live, Joan as Police Woman is electrifying and the audience here whooped and cheered as she performed songs from her new album. Check the photos here:
