Colin Meloy’s Decemberists played a sunset performance on the closing night of Sasquatch!, and a rowdy crowd greeted them with open arms. The band rocketed through tunes new and old, opening with “The Infanta” and “Down By the Water,” eventually gracing the Gorge with their hit “The Crane Wife 3.” Multi-instrumentalist Chris Funk dressed for the occasion, sporting an all-out Sasquatch costume that looked hot and probably felt hotter. He led the crowd during set closer and fan favorite “The Mariner’s Revenge Song,” as Colin Meloy instructed the audience to “scream like you’re being eaten by a whale.” Perhaps the most impressive moment was when Meloy sung “The ocean shook/The sky went black,” because at that very instant a lightning bolt streaked across the sky.
Also, of note is the presence of accordionist and singer Jenny Conlee, who had been taking a break from performing with the band due to her ongoing treatment for breast cancer diagnosed earlier this year. Fortunately, Jenny was feeling well and sounding great! (By the way, you can help support Susan G. Komen for the Cure by purchasing a Team Jenny t-shirt.)
