Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Pathways” by Ocote Soul Sounds from the 2011 album Taurus on ESL Music.
Started as a Latin-themed side project of Martin Perna of Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, and Adrian Quesada of Grupo Fantasma, Ocote Soul Sounds incorporate a wide range of styles with a particularly heavy dose of pan-Latin flavor, downtempo, afrobeat and hip-hop rhythms. Perna (vocals, saxophone, flute, guitar, organ, percussion), also contributes to the critically acclaimed band TV on the Radio, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and others. After winning a Grammy Award in 2011 and backing the Tony Award winning broadway show Fela! with their respective bands, Perna and Quesada return to Ocote Soul Sounds with their fourth studio album, Taurus. Their latest album was produced by Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation and features vocal collaborations with fellow ESL Music regulars Natalia Clavier, Sitali, Verny Varela and Chico Mann. This is the first time they’ve ever worked with an outside producer and the results show. This is one of their most inspiring albums to date.
