Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Prizefighter” by Sports from their self-titled, self-released debut.
Last time we checked in with Seattle electro-popsters Sports they had just released their debut EP which caused quite a stir about town. Today, we offer up a track from their self-titled debut full-length. They seem to have taken their minimalistic and dreamy selves and kicked it up a few notches. “Prizefighter” seems more targeted for the dance hall than your bedroom. It’s chock full of synthy goodness and layered vocals and seems to fit on an interesting part of the spectrum between New Order and STRFKR. You can catch Sports TONIGHT as they help kick off the Noise for the Needy Festival at the Underground Events Center with several great local bands including the Ononos and Fly Moon Royalty and later this summer at the Capitol Hill Block Party.
