Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards is “Without You (alternate version)” by Rainbow Arabia — the original version is found on the 2011 album Boys and Diamonds on Kompakt.
California husband and wife duo Danny and Tiffany Preston make up the two-piece synth outfit known as Rainbow Arabia. Formerly of LA bands Future Pigeon and Whisky Biscuit, the two have made their new electronic fusion project both experimental and inspiring, yet familiar enough to keep a comfortable home on their famous new label home, Kompakt.
Following the release of a couple split EP’s on Manimal Vinyl, Boys and Diamonds is Rainbow Arabia’s first full-length album and their first recorded material in over two years. Our featured song is an extended, alternate version of the song “Without You,” the first single on the new album. It’s a nice song that draws you in and prepares you for the rest of the insanity soon to follow. Their varied sounds draw comparisons to Shabba Ranks, Giorgio Moroder, Desmond Dekker, Madonna, Tom Tom Club, and Congotronics, giving us a unique blend of tribals beats and world electro sounds. Fans of Zola Jesus and Siouxsie and the Banshees should find something in common, namely a daring rhythmic and sonic exploration.
Rainbow Arabia will be live on KEXP next Friday, performing in-studio on the Morning Show with John Richards. Tune in on 6/24 at 9:30 am PST. Then they’ll be playing Saturday night at Wildrose during Seattle Pride. You can find out more about the band and listen to additional tracks on their Bandcamp page. For now, here’s the official video for “Without You”:
