Out This Week 6/21

Bon Iver‘s second and self-titled album as is sure to be the first thing many KEXP listeners will pick up when buying new records this week. Last night, to celebrate its release, Justin Vernon stopped by the Colbert Report with eight additional band members to perform a lush version of the single “Calgary.” Check out the video here:

A lot of worthwhile local albums come out this week. Portland duo Viva Voce, who split time with their full band project, Blue Giant, are back one-on-one with their eighth album of bluesy, psych-tinged rock. They’ll be in town on Wednesday for a free show at Easy Street Records Queen Anne (6pm) and stopping by KEXP as well (which you can hear on Friday at noon). Five years in the making, the latest from Seattle band Wonderful, consisting of members of U.S.E, is a grand collection of shimmering pop, Beach Boys inspired harmonies, and rich orchestration. Seattle rapper Grieves, who now lives in Brooklyn with his beat-making pal Budo, is making his Rhymesayers debut (his third album overall) and seeks to bridge the gap between himself and his fans with Together/Apart, while Portland-based duo YACHT get things moving with their second DFA release of experimental electro-pop. And Tacoma trio Helms Alee return with their sophomore album of what our Music Director, Don Yates, calls, “another bracing, expansive blend of metal, prog and psych-rock, with dynamic, shape-shifting songs balancing heavy sludge riffs with trippy guitar atmospherics, pounding hard-rock rhythms with more subtle and intricate patterns, and gruff male vocals with more melodic female voices.” Rawk!

And if you’re looking for more of those trippy heavy sounds, don’t miss the new album from JEFF the Brotherhood. Nashville brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall blew us away with their 2010 debut of expansive stoner-rock, Heavy Days, and although the latest album find them writing tighter songs, they can still lay down “plenty of heavy, rumbling guitar riffs and pummeling rock rhythms.”

A wide variety of other new releases hit record stores today, from countrified rock by likes of veteran twanger Dave Alvin, whose 11th album is appropriately titled Eleven Eleven, and the severely underrated Centro-matic, to dancy European electronica by Denmark’s When Saints Go Machine from Iceland’s FM Belfast.

There’s plenty more to be found, including the latest from LA’s Bodies of Water, waiting for you at record stores today. Be sure to check out Largehearted Boy’s list for a full rundown and sample the songs collected here before heading out.
