Out This Week 6/28

Although singer/songwriter Gillian Welch hasn’t been totally quiet over the past years, having performed and recorded with bands like The Decemberists, Bright Eyes, Solomon Burke, Steve Earle, Ralph Stanley, Ryan Adams, Alison Krauss, and many others, and of course supporting her long-time collaborator David Rawlings’ also first solo release in 2009 — but she hasn’t put out an album of her own since her 2003 release, Soul Journey. The only reason you might say that The Harrow & The Harvest, out today in record stores, isn’t worth the wait is that you wish Gillian Welch would put out fantastic albums like this every year!

Also out this week are two highly anticipated Sub Pop releases, from Seattle’s own Shabazz Palaces and Montreal’s Handsome Furs. Formerly one third of the highly regarded and influential group Digable Planets, Ishmael Butler continues to redefine hip hop with Shabazz Palaces, whose full-length debut, Black Up, is easily going to be one of the most inventive albums you’ll hear all year. KEXP is thrilled to have them as our guests live on KEXP today at 12PM! Meanwhile, Handsome Furs’ third release, Sound Kapital, was reportedly first intended to be solely an electronic album and written entirely on keyboards, but somewhere along the way it grew into something more. On it, husband/wife duo Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry exude seduction while focusing on, in Boeckner’s words, “what it means to be human in this frequently oppressive modern landscape.”

Seattle group The Black Whales, who were our guests live on the Midday Show yesterday, are self-releasing their latest, Shangri-La Indeed, while The Night Beats, also from our own rainy town, are debuting with psych/garage heavy self-titled LP. Other new releases KEXP listeners will want to look out for this week are the latest from Thievery Corporation and John Maus, plus a few compilations: Red Hot + Rio 2, benefitting The Red Hot Organization and featuring Beck, David Byrne, Aloe Blacc, Beirut, and many others; Rave On Buddy Holly, featuring covers by The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, Lou Reed, Florence + the Machine, Justin Townes Earle, other great performers; and First Edition by The Fruit Tree Foundation, a Scottish contingent made up of Idlewild’s Rod Jones and Emma Pollock (The Delgados), who are joined by members of Twilight Sad, Frightened Rabbit, and others in support of The Mental Health Foundation of Scotland.

Gillian Welch isn’t the only reigning Woman of Twang hitting record stores this week. Other excellent new albums arrive today from Marianne Faithful, Dolly Parton, Jolie Holland, and Eilen Jewell. And if you’re really looking to get out into the stratosphere further than even Shabazz Palaces might allow, pick up the double-LP < bmbz > by Akron/Family, which is even more experimental than their already out-there 2010 release, S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT.
