Sonic Roundup 6/28

  • Bon Iver continues to make headlines after the release of his latest Bon Iver, Bon Iver, whether it’s rave reviews or pointless namecalling. However you swing on the matter, there’s no denying the man’s got talent, and recently took to the studio for a piano-laden double cover of Bonnie Raitt‘s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” and “Nick of Time.”

  • Newly reunited Archers of Loaf have already brought their high-energy rock to the Pacific Northwest, but that’s not the last stop on the road for the 90’s stalwarts. The group stopped by Jimmy Fallon’s show to blast through a raucous version of their hit “Wrong,” from their classic LP Icky Mettle which will be reissued August 2nd via Merge.

  • M83‘s Anthony Gonzalez has been amping up the expectations for his band’s newest LP — and now eager fans can catch a first taste with this minute-and-a-half clip. Of course, that isn’t much, considering the forthcoming, untitled double album is reportedly “very, very epic” and “very orchestrated,” but it should be enough to wet your palette. It starts off pretty simple, with Gonzalez playing some synths at home, but soon M83’s sense of grandeur takes hold.

  • This may come as a surprise to listeners, but KEXP doesn’t really specialize in metal [ed. during the daytime, at least — check out our weekly metal show, Seek & Destroy, Sundays at midnight!]. But sometimes, things are too good to pass up; such is the case with the new video from Atlanta’s Mastodon. While the group is anticipating the release of their new album The Hunter, the Adult Swim Singles Project has unleashed a new track and video from the band’s 2009 sessions that brought forth Crack the Skye the same year. This one’s called “Deathbound,” and the video features a bunch of puppets embracing chaos. It’s a complete riot, in all meanings of the word.
