Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Gypsy Faded” by Joseph Arthur from the 2011 album The Graduation Ceremony on Lonely Astronaut.
Joseph Arthur has ranked among one of the most visited (and talented) in-studio guests at the station and with good reason — KEXP loves Joseph Arthur. With such powerful songwriting and a penchant for amazing live shows, it was no surprise we were all so anxious to hear his long-awaited album, The Graduation Ceremony, his first full-length solo album since 2006’s Nuclear Daydream. Easily distracted by the multitude of other projects he’s constantly working on, Arthur comes quietly roaring back to the forefront with this release after five years of work with his band The Lonely Astronauts and four other solo EPs. Arthur has always been somewhat of a recluse/mad scientist/creative genius when it comes to anything “musical” or “artsy” and on this album he certainly breaks out all his old tricks (and maybe even a few new ones). From the simple notes that open the album to the rich harmonies that wrap it up, Arthur manages to entrance both hardcore fans and even a few brave new listeners in the process. He makes this whole music thing seem pretty easy.
Joseph Arthur will be touring North America this Summer and Fall in support of his new album, The Graduation Ceremony, performing solo and painting live onstage along the way. Tour stops include the Pearl Jam 20 Festival (Sept. 3 & 4), Austin City Limits (Sept. 18) and an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (July 20). In the meantime, enjoy this video for the song “Vacancy” from his exclusive KEXP performance last year at the Triple Door in Seattle:
