Seattle’s own Blue Scholars have been such an integral part of the local music scene, it’s hard to remember a time when they weren’t around (or at least it is for this blogger, who was 12 at the time of their inception). They’ve appeared at Sasquatch! three separate years and opened for Kanye West at Bumbershoot, and have never signed to a major label, preferring to simply start their own. The duo, consisting of George Quibuyen and Saba Mohajerjasbi, center their lyrics around the struggles of socioeconomic classes, challenging authority, and youth empowerment, all balanced by meticulously crafted beats. Now, witness them perform a few choice cuts from their new album Cinemetropolis, live in the KEXP studios.
