Thursday News Roundup

via Wayne Coyne's Twitter

  • The Flaming Lips releasing a few new tracks isn’t exactly headline news. Wayne Coyne always seems to have something cooking, whether it’s a new album, new live recordings, an album of covers, or something else incredibly weird, borderline disturbing, and equally as cool. This falls under the “weird, borderline disturbing, and cool” category. The Lips have released three new songs (which can be streamed via Pitchfork here), but the songs were not released on vinyl or a CD or over iTunes. They come by way of USB drives embedded in packaged gummy fetuses (pictured above). For more weird shit from Coyne and The Flaming Lips, keep tabs on his Twitter, which is one of the most entertaining out there.

  • The nominees for the prestigious Mercury Prize, going to the best UK album of the year, have been announced. Last year the XX won, and this year’s nominees are headlined by James Blake. For the complete list, click here.
  • Click here to listen to “Otis,” the first single from Kanye West and Jay-Z‘s forthcoming collaborative album Watch The Throne.
  • Neon Indian recently announced he would be releasing the follow-up to his 2009 album Psychic Chasms later this summer, on September 13. The album will be called Era Extra├▒a and you can view a tracklist here. Even more recently Neon Indian, aka Alan Polomo released a fall touring schedule. He’ll be playing at The Crocodile on October 5, and you can view the full schedule here. Now, without further adieu, here are two super cool videos to get you geared up for the psychedelic chill-waver’s second LP:
