Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased tracks, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Disko-Tech (feat. Ms. G)” by Ursula 1000 from the 2011 album Mondo Beyondo on ESL Music.
Ursula 1000 is the alter ego of Brooklyn-based producer/DJ/multi-instrumentalist Alex Gimeno. His albums and mix sessions have taken on a broad scope of retro tinged spy grooves, bumping latin disco funk, hints of post punk, electro, go go, sleazy glam rock — and he never stops evolving. You can hear it in his remixes for the likes of Quincy Jones, Felix Da Housecat, The Faint, Fort Knox Five to a slew of television remodels and brand campaigns.
For his latest album, Mondo Beyondo, Ursula 1000 treats listeners with brand new originals featuring Fred Schneider of the B-52s, French avant-jazz singer Isabelle Antena, Thievery Corporation chanteuse Natalia Clavier, Big Mike Geier from Atlanta’s premier big band Kingsized and introducing Ms. G, an emcee who appears on this track and about whom we know very little. Otherwise, all guitars, bass, electric sitar, organs, synthesizers, percussion, drum programming and electronic tonalities on the album are performed by Alex Gimeno — quite an impressive feat!
Currently, there are no upcoming U.S. tour dates listed on his website, but hopefully he’ll be landing in your town soon. Until then, check out the Ursula 1000 video for the title track to Mondo Beyondo, directed by Gi Young Rhee and starring Anna Copa Cabanna:
