Song of the Day: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Same Mistake

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased tracks, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Same Mistake” by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah from their 2011 self-released album Hysterical.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Same Mistake (MP3)

With the release of their self-titled debut album in 2005, Brooklyn-based indie pop quintet Clap Your Hands Say Yeah proved that a band doesn’t need to be heavily represented by the Powers That Be to make a splash. With some ingenuity, determination, the Internet, and most importantly, good music, they were able to slowly spread buzz and garner acclaim without the help of a record label. Upon its release, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah took the indie community by storm, and most touted it as one of the best albums of 2005. They signed with English label Wichita Recordings to release the album overseas, but decided once again to self-release their 2007 follow-up, Some Loud Thunder. Though a solid record by most accounts, Some Loud Thunder fell somewhat flat with critics and fans of the band, perhaps partially due to the absence of the subversive hype and anticipation of something new that preceded their debut.

Since the release of Some Loud Thunder, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah have endured a number of break-up rumors, and though years went by without any recording, the band maintained that they were only on a break, not broken up. Their hiatus only being temporary was proven to be true earlier this year when they announced they would be releasing a new album, Hysterical, later in 2011, and that in keeping with tradition, it would also be self-released. Hysterical will hit shelves in the US on September 20, and will be out in the UK, Europe, and Japan a week earlier on the 12th. Today’s featured song, “Same Mistake,” features CYHSY’s familiar up-tempo drumming, Alec Ounsworth’s perpetually puberty-stricken voice, and a chorus of backing strings – everything we have come to love and expect from the band.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are currently on tour, but won’t be coming any further west than Austin, where they’ll be playing the Fun Fun Fun Fest in early November (they did, however, just play the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco). While we’re waiting for them to come through the Northwest, take a look at the promo video for Hysterical below. Also of note is that CYHSY will be re-issuing their debut album on vinyl concurrently with the new album. Visit their website for more info.
