Song of the Day: Black Whales – Walking In The Dark

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Walking In The Dark” by Black Whales from their self-released album Shangri-La Indeed.

Black Whales – Walking In The Dark (MP3)

A few weeks ago, Seattle psych/pop/rockers Black Whales helped open up the Summer series Concerts at The Mural along with The Maldives and Hey Marseilles. It’s only fitting that we also ask them to help us kick off our transition into fall as well. They agreed by sharing the aptly titled song of the day: “Walking in the Dark” as many of us will be doing that in the weeks to come as the days shorten. Their blend of light and dark elements make the perfect soundtrack for the waning days of summer. The jangly guitars and upbeat sounding tunes are in perfect contrast to their darker lyrical content.

The Black Whales will be heading out next week on a West Coast tour, but don’t fret, they’ll be back before you know it. You can catch them at Neumos during the City Arts Festival with Fences, William Eliot Whitmore and Daniel G. Harmann on 10/21. Find more info on their Bandcamp page.

Here they are performing “Lately” from their recent appearance at the Seattle Center Mural Amphitheater for the Concerts at the Mural series:
