Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased tracks, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Animal” by Kopecky Family Band from their self-released 2011 album, Of Epic Proportions.
The Kopecky Family Band began creating music together in Nashville, Tennessee, in the Fall of 2007. Leading the group are singers Gabe and Kelsey, along with Steven (lead guitar), Corey (bass), Markus (cello), and David (drums), and though they’re not really a family, but rather Nashville college coeds, together they create familial music that’s emotive and infectious though multi-layered harmonies and beautiful string sections. Their orchestral sound and melodies are just aching for you to sing along with.
In the spring of 2010, it was time for the Family to pack into their 15-passenger van (which was nicknamed “The War Wagon”) and head to Austin, Texas, for SXSW. When in the studio with production duo Partners in Crime, Russ Long and Chris Grainger (Wilco, Sixpence None the Richer), the Kopecky Family Band produced The Disaster EP which was released in August 2010. Since then, the band released a limited edition split 7″ vinyl with Seattle friends Ivan & Alyosha, and returned to Austin yet again for SXSW. The band also attended Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in 2011 for the first time as performers. So already the buzz is starting to grow around this young band.
We think their twitter profile sums up the band’s personality best: “Moving about the country family style like the Griswolds. And when we aren’t, you ask? Chillin in Nashville with some of the best people in the whole world.”
The Kopecky Family Band is currently on tour with Givers and will quickly follow that up supporting Gomez. They recently played at The Gorge as part of The Dave Matthews Band Caravan Tour but will be back in town on September 27 at the Showbox at the Market with Gomez. Check out their website for more information about the band and for more upcoming tour dates. The band is back in the studio for 2011 and expecting to release an album later this year.
