Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show Host Cheryl Waters, is “Love the Way You Walk Away” by Blitzen Trapper from their forthcoming album American Goldwing available through Sub Pop Records.
Portland’s Blitzen Trapper has a timeless quality and strong narrative to their music that instantly draws you in to Eric Earley’s lyrical world which is populated with real and mythical beasts, honest characters, and fateful memories. Their latest effort American Goldwing is doused in nostalgia, yet it also spurs the listener forward as the notes of the open road call to you to pick yourself up and dust yourself off. Today’s song “Love the Way You Walk Away” is about watching someone you love walk away and realizing you didn’t do enough to keep them there. It’s bittersweet, it’s self-depricating, it’s familiar.
The new album, American Goldwing, hits stores next Tuesday 9/13 and Blitzen Trapper will be celebrating with a MFNW appearance tonight (9/9) at the Crystal Ballroom, a live in-studio performance at 1pm on 9/13 with Cheryl Waters, as well as a FREE in-store performance at Easy Street later that night. More dates and info available on their Myspace page or website.
