Seattle songwriter David Bazan is no stranger to KEXP, having performed live in-studio and at station events going back years as Pedro the Lion, The Headphones, and most recently with his self-titled project. He’s also no stranger to his fans, as his albums are typically self-critical, all-baring, soul-searching affairs. On his latest album, though, David Bazan looks more critically at the world outside, and while the topics of Strange Negotiations may seem a little bleak (society=bad), his songwriting and performing never is. Joining him for the first time more cohesively on album, and in the KEXP studio for a live session on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is his band -- drummer Alex Westcoat and bassist Andy Fitts. I like Bazan’s music. Great voice, sparce musical style, meaningful lyrics. Very cool. I discovered his song ‘People’ via a KEXP podcast; it caught my ear. I had no idea he was local to Seattle. Definitely going to catch one of his shows. Seems partial to the key of Bm/D.
