Mercury Prize-nominated Anna Calvi utilizes a vast array of instrumentation as the background to her powerful voice. Her self-titled debut earned international critical accolades, charting in the United States, France, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, and Germany, and her confident and expressive stage presence has been compared to that of PJ Harvey and Siouxsie Sioux. Musically, she’s been described as dark, romantic, and atmospheric pop, with arrangements featuring violin, guitar, piano, and accordion, and vocals that alternately whisper and explode. All this combined with a strong minimalist sensibility make Calvi’s performances all the more affecting. That may not mean much when she’s on the airwaves, but thanks to these clips from her recent KEXP in-studio, you can experience Calvi the way she was clearly meant to be seen.
