Out This Week 10/4

Perhaps not long awaited, but certainly eagerly anticipated — the new album by Zola Jesus follows not much more than a year since the critically acclaimed Stradilum II. The equally mysteriously named Conatus (actually, it’s a Latin term referring the “will to live”) is equally strong, and according to our Music Director, Don Yates, is full of “goth-tinged electro-pop loaded with epic, emotionally tempestuous songs laced with dark, haunting synths along with some gorgeous strings, martial rhythms and celestial backing vocals, but the most powerful instrument of all is her own dramatic, emotion-stirred voice.” Wow, right?

Also, topping this week’s list of new releases is the sophomore effort from Scottish group We Were Promised Jet Packs, whose In The Pit Of The Stomach is fueled by post-punky fervor and fury, and the also-80’s inspired S.C.U.M., who manage to make you forget their unappealing name as their moodily atmospheric songs develop “a dark, ominous sound blending shoegazerish guitars, swirling synths and Thomas Cohen’s sinister-sounding croon.” And on her fourth studio album (fifth overall), Leslie Feist, or just Feist, strips away the production sheen of her earlier work and balances intriguing sonic quirks with characteristically solid songwriting. It may be a slightly different Feist here on record, but she’s one that new and old fans will continue to recognize and love.

Other new releases worth picking up this week include the latest multigenre sample-mad mix from DJ Shadow, a new solo release from Tom Vek (who is not only DJ Shadow’s labelmate but appears as a guest on his album!), the sixth album of sweeping orchestral pop from Sweden’s Loney Dear, and the fourth from Portland’s instrumental duo Talkdemonic. And, almost as if he’s sneaking into the hen house, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy follows up a series of recent EPs with his new full-length Wolfroy Goes To Town.

Pick up all of these and the Bob Dylan-curated project, The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams — featuring Dylan, Jack White, Lucinda Williams and a selection of country stars — starting today in record stores near you.
