Monday News Roundup

  • Former Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh passed away this weekend in a Chicago hotel room. Welsh joined the band after Matt Sharp’s departure, recording on The Green Album and performing on the subsequent tour. He left the band in 2001 to pursue a successful career as a painter and visual artist. The news of his death follows a two-week-old tweet (now removed) that stated “dreamt i died in chicago next weekend (heart attack in my sleep). need to write my will today.” He was 40.
  • Kate Bush just released the first single, “Wild Man,” from her new album as a video today. 50 Words for Snow will be released on November 21 and will include all new material that was recorded during the same sessions that produced her last album, Director’s Cut. Watch the video now:

  • Thursday, October 13th will see the premiere of From A Mess to the Masses, the new documentary detailing the trials and tribulations of French indie rock group Phoenix, who hit the big time after the release of their 2009 album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. • More French goodness follows with a stream of M83′s sprawling new double album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, out October 18th. The album is an immense electro-shoegaze symphony that includes vocals from Zola Jesus and enough driving synth lines to give you whiplash from all that nodding. Catch it over at Urban Outfitters.
  • Atlas Sound has already been generous with singles from his latest album Parallax, but in case you haven’t had enough, he’s made a new one entitled “Amplifiers” available for streaming. Check it out with the widget below.

  • The xx have been quiet since their 2009 debut but their percussion engineer Jamie xx has been far from it. He’s remixed Gil-Scott Heron (among many others), released a steel-drum based single, and has since collaborated with Quayola and Rizlab for a London visual arts showcase in September. Now, you can check out the video for his new track “Progress,” with visuals by Quayola. Check it out over at Rizlab’s site.
  • This week, Ryan Adams releases his thirteenth studio album, Ashes & Fire. The first single, “Lucky Now,” has just been released on video. Watch it now, and see Ryan Adams live in person during this year’s City Arts festival.
