Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased tracks, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection is “Answer” by CANT from the 2011 album Dreams Come True on Terrible Records.
CANT, known to most as Grizzly Bear bassist Chris Taylor, debuted in 2009 with a single, but his solo project didn’t really kick off until earlier this year, which saw the release of the album Dreams Come True. Recorded with Twin Shadow and performed onstage as a full band, CANT sees Taylor step into the limelight in an almost unrecognizable turn away from Grizzly Bear’s indie-folk aesthetic. Today’s song, “Answer,” is one of the biggest shifts on an album of psychedelic pop, substituting tribal disco in lieu of more familiar sounds. Distorted pianos trill and the beats warp and wobble, but the main focus is Taylor’s vocals, which are manipulated and layered beyond recognition. It’s an exhilarating change that evokes moody, drug-addled imagery on par with Heavy Metal.
