Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased tracks, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “I’m Gonna Try” by Shimmering Stars from their 2011 album Violent Hearts on Hardly Art.
Shimmering Stars began with Rory McClure’s discovery of old live footage of the venerable country-rock duo The Everly Brothers in spring 2010. McClure proceeded to hole up in his parent’s garage to record the first demos of a project that would eventually see the addition of Andrew Dergousoff on drums and Brent Sasaki on bass. The band decided to keep the home-grown, garage rock aesthetic, rendering distinctly dusty atmospherics with reverb-soaked guitars and vocal harmonies that almost sound like a choir. While “I’m Gonna Try” sounds bright and cheerful, it’s an unabashedly dark song lyrically. “Walking down the street and I wanna kill everyone I see,” the trio croons to open the tune after a rollicking guitar riff gets things off to a toe-tapping start. In a sense, this is a perfect song to feature on Halloween: deceptively haunting and diabolical, with all the appearances of a genial folk-rock jam.
Shimmering Stars will be playing in Seattle on December 9 at the Rendezvous’ JewelBox Theater. Catch up with the band on Facebook, head over to Hardly Art to preorder the record, and watch the video for “I’m Gonna Try” below:
