Out This Week 11/8

Bradford Cox’s “solo” project Atlas Sound tops the list of new releases this week. We couldn’t make a stronger recommendation than our Music Director, Don Yates, who calls it Cox’s “most focused and pop-leaning Atlas Sound recording to date, featuring some of his sharpest songwriting yet on this beautifully crafted set of atmospheric dream-pop with a spacey, multi-layered sound comprised of echoing guitars, twinkling synths, gentle rhythms, trippy effects and wistful pop melodies accompanying Cox’s crooning vocals (which are considerably clearer and more upfront in the mix than before).” Sounds great, right? It is.

Other worthwhile releases come from Portugal’s Buraka Som Sistema, whose second album is a beat-driven melting pot of sounds that combines electronic dance music with Caribbean and various African styles. Iconoclastic director David Lynch may be strange but is no stranger to making music, as he’s already collaborated in the past with Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks), Polish pianist Marek Zebrowski (Inland Empire), and Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse) with Danger Mouse (Dark Night of the Soul). Crazy Clown Time, though, is Lynch’s first true solo album. Bristol, England’s dubstep/grime producer Joker follows up a string of 12″ jams with his official full-length debut. And the questionably named Copenhagen band Treefight for Sunlight (maybe it means something cool in Danish) also debuts, with “a sunny blend of blissful psych-pop and carefree beach-pop.”

Plus, we have a premiere track from Icelandic/Danish artist Snævar Albertsson, whose current project, Dad Rocks!, is full of clever, sometimes ironic lo-fi folk. We got a chance to record an exclusive session with Dad Rocks! at the Ace Hotel during CMJ and will put video up of that soon. But for now, here’s his song “Weapons,” featuring Broken Social Scene’s Charles Spearin:
