‘Tis the season for box sets and gift packaging and not so much for new albums in general. Critics, DJs, and music lovers in general are compiling their top ten lists — in fact, we want you to vote for your favorite releases of 2011 for KEXP’s end-of-the-year countdown here — so you won’t find many new albums on this week’s list of new releases. Adele fans, though, will want to pick up the new Live At the Royal Albert Hall CD/DVD combo, especially since it might be a while for her to recover from vocal cord surgery. Gorillaz fans will also psyched for their singles collections in a sweet CD/DVD combo as well, since the Damon Albarn-led project has always been as much about the animation as the music. And if you’ve been longing for some early 90’s epic alt-rock, EMI is rereleasing The Smashing Pumkins‘s incredible first two albums, Gish and Siamese Dream, with all kinds of bonus material, including rare and previously unreleased audio content, and each contains a DVD featuring a different never-before-released live show recorded at the Metro in Chicago.
It’s not all about the repackaging and remastering this week, as you’ll also find a few worthwhile new albums as well, such as an EP from the new project by The Mighty Lemon Drops’ former singer David Newton and long-running southern power-poppers The Young Antiques. You’ll find more on Largehearted Boy’s list, including a re-issue of Richard Thompson‘s often overlooked 1981 instrumental album, Strict Tempo!. Before you do head off, though, check out the highlights below and don’t forget to vote for your own favorites!
