Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Following” by Phenomenal Handclap Band, from their forthcoming 2012 album Form & Control on Tummy Touch Records.
Not just your average run-of-the-mill handclap band, New York’s Phenomenal Handclap Band are setting the bar high for the rest of the psych-disco set with the release of their new song “Following.” The song is the adventurous lead single off of the forthcoming new album, Form & Control (set to be released early 2012) and finds the six-piece band delving even deeper into the cosmic disco-funk and psychedelic soul evident on their 2009 self-titled debut LP.
The Phenomenal Handclap Band was started by New York City underground club DJs Daniel Collás, the Witch Doctor, and Sean Marquand, the Medicine Man who have previously worked with Aurelio Valle (Callas), Jaleel Bunton (TV on the Radio), Jon Spencer (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) and Lady Tigra (L’Trimm). When describing our featured song “Following”, Sean Marquand says it best:
“At a truly great dance party, there is a moment when you can feel a certain energy take off in the room. You can look around and see that everyone is in to the exact same thing at the exact same moment, it’s a unifying force. The song is directed toward all of those who might want to join that moment and experience the same spirit”. Can you think of some times like that? We sure can. It would be reasonably fair to say that this new material is a bold new direction for the band and we can’t wait to hear the rest of the new album.
The band has a few schedule shows in NY and the UK; however, in the meantime, you can keep up to date with The Phenomenal Handclap Band on their website, Facebook page or Twitter. For now, here they are performing their 2009 hit “15 to 20″ live on KEXP from the Cutting Room Studios in NYC:
