Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Nodding Off” by The Wavves featuring Best Coas, from the 2011 EP Life Sux on Ghost Ramp Records.
“Tired of dealing with labels,” Wavves front man and twenty-something stoner idol Nathan Williams decided to start up his own record label. He dubbed the new distribution engine Ghost Ramp and set it in motion with a new Wavves EP Life Sux, on which he courts the help of his stoner queen Bethany Cosentino’s band Best Coast, as well as lo-fi thrashers Fucked Up. Released on September 20, Ghost Ramp’s maiden release contains five songs, the first single being “I Wanna Meet Dave Grohl.” Another standout track is today’s featured song, “Nodding Off,” on which Best Coast appears, and if you want to taste what the Fucked Up collab sounds like, check out “Destroy.”
“Nodding Off” is a pop song about relationship frustration and withdrawl, and Wavves’ typical scuzzy instrumentation and Williams’ tinny voice are offset nicely by Cosentino’s cooing harmonies. Cosentino’s presence on the track isn’t largely significant, but her relatively delicate accentuations certainly work well, filling out the relationship dynamic the song centers around (the fact that Williams and Cosentino are dating in real life aids this as well).
Wavves don’t seem to have any domestic tour dates on the horizon, but they will be playing the Weezer Cruise in Cozumel, Mexico, for multiple days in January. Check back with their MySpace for updates. For now, here’s their video for “Bug,” the first video from the Life Sux EP:
