There were so many incredible releases this past year, of course it was tough to narrow them down! While there are several expected choices on my list (The Cave Singers, Fleet Foxes, MMJ), there are a few unanticipated additions. Annie Clark, for example, performed an acoustic in-studio session back in October that blew my mind. It’s rare to see her play acoustically, so that was a treat in and of itself. But somehow she managed to encompass both delicacy and power at 9 in the morning, after driving here straight from her Vancouver show. She was exhausted, but you couldn’t hear it in her voice. Seeing that side of an artist is pretty inspiring, which is why St. Vincent landed on the top of my list. A good portion of my picks were directly related to their in studio performances—so thanks to KEXP, I was able to discover some awesome new music in 2011!
