Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. This week we are featuring songs for the holidays. Today’s featured selection is “Snow Blow” by Breathe Owl Breathe from the 2011 compilation The Never Ending Beginning on Hometapes.
Hometapes Records recently released a compilation of quaint, unconventional holiday songs called The Never Ending Beginning. Seeing as Breathe Owl Breathe is on the Hometapes roster and their latest release, Magic Central, features frontman Micah Middaugh surrounded by snow and ice, it’s not surprising that the Michigan trio was game to lend a track to the wintery compilation. Their contribution, “Snow Blow,” features chilling winds, ice crystal chimes, and the alternating, ethereal voices of Breathe Owl Beathe’s vocal tandem of Middaugh and Andrea Moreno-Beals.
Some of the 21 tracks of The Never Ending Beginning are original songs like “Snow Blow,” while others are abstract covers of Christmas classics (listen to “Feliz Navidad” by Slaraffenland and you’ll know what I mean). You can stream the entire compilation via Dangerous Minds here.
