Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Runaway” by Imperial Teen from the 2012 album Feel the Sound on Merge.
After a five-year hiatus, Imperial Teen is back with their fifth studio album, Feel the Sound. The Bay Area foursome — consisting of Roddy Bottum from Faith No More on guitar/vocals, Lynn Perko Truell on drums/vocals, Will Schwartz (also of Hey Willpower) on guitar/vocals, and Jone Stebbins on bass — has been around since 1996 and should be no stranger to KEXP staff and listeners. In fact, the band recorded an in-studio with us all the way back in 2002 (listen here) and even played live in Chicago on KEXP again in 2007 (check it out here), the same year they released their last album, The Hair The TV The Baby & The Band. Our featured track “Runaway” is the first song on the forthcoming record and is a masterfully crafted pop song in which every member of the band sings lead at once. Set to be released next month on Merge Records, Feel the Sound is the brightest new addition to an already impressive pop catalog. If you’re a fan of new wave and power pop, and somehow you’ve missed this band, now would be an excellent time for an introduction. For the rest of us, it has been a long five years to wait..
As of yet, there are no scheduled tour dates; however, be sure to check out more songs on Imperial Teen’s Facebook page and on their website, where you can also pre-order Feel the Sound now on CD or LP and receive a poster and a limited-edition key-chain earplug case (while supplies last).
Here they are performing their past hit “Million Dollar Man” live at XX Merge, the label’s 20th anniversary show back in 2009:
