Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Elegy” by Hey Marseilles from their recent 7″ release available through Onto Entertainment.
Today’s song is a taste of new music from Seattle septet Hey Marseilles who offer up a couple of new songs before releasing their much anticipated full-length which is due out next year. Seattle (and beyond) fell in love with their blend of folk and chamber pop with its soaring, lush melodies and earnest lyrics. Their ability to weave old world aesthetics (indie music lovers are flocking to bands with traditional instruments these days, perhaps as a reaction to the prevalence of the vocoder?) with modern pop sensibilities have kept them being pegged as a niche act, but it’s probably their lack of pretention that has opened so many ears and hearts.
Their self-released debut To Travels & Trunks had several jaunty tunes that belied some of the deeper sadness that was found in their lyrics. Today’s song, despite the melancholic title and more somber tone (except the peppy na na na’s in the intro) is ultimately more hopeful in narrative.
“Elegy” is a song about two people wanting to leave everything behind for a life less complicated, and that sentiment represents all of these new songs pretty well. This new record is a testament to change and the importance of community as an anchor in our lives.
It was recorded with Grammy-winning producer Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens) and hopefully gives a peek into what’s to come next year.
Hey Marseilles recently played a sold-out show at The Neptune but don’t have any more dates listed right now. Keep an eye on their website for more info. In the meantime, you can treat your ears to more Hey Marseilles by checking out their recent KEXP in-studio performance. And here’s the video for today’s song:
