Live Video: Acrassicauda

In 2007, a group of young Iraqis achieved the impossible. After forming their country’s first and only heavy metal band -- during the regime of Saddam Hussein no less -- they persevered through invasion, war, exile, and more odds than any American band would ever face, to ultimately gain international recognition and become the subject of an acclaimed feature documentary. Heavy Metal in Baghdad, produced by VICE media’s VBS.tv, follows Acrassicauda (Latin for “Black Scorpion”) as they flee an increasingly violent Baghdad into Syria, Turkey, and eventually to the United States, where they meet their heroes, Metallica, and are able to stay as refugees. It’s a fascinating and inspiring story that any fans of music would enjoy (see our review of it during SIFF ’08 here), and needless to say, we were thrilled to finally get them in-studio at KEXP for a live performance. On this night during a rare Seattle summer heatwave, one that could make even these Iraqis sweat, Acrassicauda proceeded to tear it up exclusively for KEXP’s metal show, Seek & Destroy, with host Hannah Levin.
