Song of the Day: Canyons – My Rescue

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased tracks, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “My Rescue” by Canyons from the 2011 album Keep Your Dreams on Modular.

    Canyons – My Rescue (MP3)

Modular People has always brought their A-game, with a lineup that features heavy hitters like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Cut Copy, Chromeo, and Robyn, along with other more niche acts such as Architecture in Helsinki, The Avalanches, and Tame Impala. Australian duo Canyons are their most recent addition, and with their debut album Keep Your Dreams, they’ve made a strong statement that they belong in the former category. Ryan Grieve and Leo Thomson were producing music long before they were brought together, but it’s clear they were destined to meet. After making waves remixing Ladyhawke, !!!, and The Juan Maclean, Modular was quick to pick up the talented youngsters, and the rest is history. Dreams is a sprawling epic, blending prog, dance-punk, and house into an indecipherable mix of bloops and beats that send off fireworks in the brainpan. Today’s track, “My Rescue,” is a progressive jam wrapped in a dancefloor groove, backed by thundering synths that ripple like clouds in the wind. By the time the piano and vocals kick in, you’re through the stratosphere.

Currently, the band lists only two show in the next few months in their home country of Australia. But hopefully, as more people dig into this album, they’ll get to touring the U.S. Until then, catch the video for fellow album track “See Blind Eyes” below, head on over to the band’s Soundcloud to stream the album in full, and don’t forget to shoot them a “like” on Facebook.
