Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased tracks, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Young Dreams” by Young Dreams from a 2011 single on Modular Records.
Young Dreams is a Norwegian collective, headed up by the talented composer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Matias Tellez. The 12-piece from Bergen, Norway, gained some notoriety in November 2010, after three songs they uploaded to their Facebook page were picked up by international music press. The band features Matias Tellez alongside members from bands such as Casiokids, The Megaphonic Thrift and Bloody Beach. What do they sound like? Fusing tropicalia, psychedelic rock, baroque pop, and classical symphonic arrangements, they sound a little like Fleet Foxes, only pushed through a dreamy Nordic pop filter, especially on their eponymous track “Young Dreams.” Young Dreams, the band, has signed to Modular and are planning to release their debut album sometime next year. If you’re unfamiliar with their beautiful, vast, dreamy pop, you should give them a listen.
Currently, he band has a few upcoming shows in London but otherwise no announced dates yet for 2012. Be sure to catch up with the band on their website and follow them on Facebook. Here’s the beautiful (and a little dark) video, directed by Kristoffer Borgli for today’s featured song “Young Dreams”:
