Monday News Roundup

  • The times, they are a-changin': months ago, The New York Times quoted Bon Iver‘s Justin Vernon as saying “We should not be gathering in a big room and looking at each other and pretending this is important,” in reference to the Grammy Awards (and Bon Iver’s four nominations). Then, the above promotional poster surfaced. No word yet as to whether or not Vernon & co. will be performing on the broadcast.

  • Old Ideas, the new album by Leonard Cohen — his 12th, in fact — is streaming over at NPR Music. Give a listen to a living master here.
  • Andrew Bird has released the first song from his new album Break It Yourself, out March 6th. The track, titled “Eyeoneye,” is available to stream over at Bird’s Soundcloud. Also notable? Every person who buys a ticket for Bird’s upcoming tour will receive a download code for the album, as well as two live EPs from 2011 and 2012. Bird will be bringing his tour to Seattle’s Paramount Theatre on April 9th.
  • Fans of M. Ward are rejoicing, for the Him-half of indie pop duo She & Him has revealed his new solo album, A Wasteland Companion, out April 10th. Musical guests include She-half Zooey Deschanel, Mogis, Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, Howe Gelb of Giant Sand, and PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish, among others. Despite having announced a spring tour, Ward is lacking a Seattle date. Anybody else hoping for a Sasquatch! appearance?
  • Austin City Limits is back, and last night’s episode featured performances by Joanna Newsom and Fleet Foxes. Watch both performances below. Last week, ACL hosted Arcade Fire, and upcoming artists include Lykke Li, Florence and the Machine, and Wilco.

  • Today’s “WTF” news comes from the Disney camp, where the corporate goliath has revealed a T-shirt design satirizing the album cover for Joy Division‘s Unknown Pleasures. The signature design has been substituted with the image of Mickey Mouse encapsulated within the graphic pulse of a star. The shirt was “created especially for Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort.” Take a look for yourself.
