Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Anyone’s Guess” by Tomten from their self-released album Wednesday’s Children.
The snow may be gone and though we’ve had a couple of Spring-esque days this week, we’re still a long way away from the golden days of summer. We wrap up this week’s Song of the Day podcast selections with some dreamy baroque pop from local up-and-commers Tomten. This Seattle quartet formed in 2010 as students at Cornish and charmed people’s hearts and ears at last year’s EMP Sound Off! competition as the wildcard winner of the annual underage band competition. Since then they have been quite busy recording, while still taking breaks to play Bumbershoot and do shows with notable bands around town, and even played at Menningarnótt, or “culture night,” in Iceland. 2012 looks to be a great year for these guys, who apparently just signed a record deal with Flat Field Records. Look for their debut EP to come out this spring and their full-length this summer.
You can catch them live next week on February 1st at The Sunset with Danny the Street and Kithkin. Check out their Bandcamp page for more information. For now, here they are performing “The Pleasure is All Yours” at last year’s EMP Sound Off! Competition.
