KEXP Spring Membership Drive: The KEXP Habit

Earlier this month, a young woman named Gina (a KEXP listener from Mexico) made a trip to Seattle, largely inspired by her love of KEXP. After a seven-day visit and a permanently inked forearm, it became clear that she’d fit right in here in the Emerald City. She wrote in to Morning Show host John Richards:

I had the most exciting and happy days of my life visiting Seattle (and I’m not just saying it, I mean it). I made my first donation to KEXP ($15/month), and now I wanna do this forever. I’m happy to support the cause in a real way, doing something for this amazing and soul-lifting radio station.

She also included some photos from her vacation, adding: “I even got my first tattoo [in Seattle]!” In my opinion, she’s really got her priorities straight: records, coffee, and KEXP. A girl after my own heart.

When I visited family for the holidays, the inevitable subject of Seattleites and their coffee came up: “If you take the price of that coffee and add it up over the year, just think about how much money you’re spending!” I did a few quick mental calculations and met the accusation with a blank stare. You see, to me, it’s totally worth it. I live in the country’s caffeine capital, and I want to enjoy every minute of it.

When I spend my paycheck on lattes, I know I could probably cut back. But when I multiply my monthly donation to KEXP, I’m proud of the way my gift adds up over the year. I know that each and every donation makes an impact on the station, and I’m glad I can do my part. (And I don’t have to justify this habit to my family... they’re proud supporters, too!)

Like so many members of the KEXP Community, music is an incredibly important part of my life, and so my donation to KEXP takes priority in my budget. My coffee habit keeps my heart racing, but my KEXP habit fills it with joy. And while I’m not brave enough to tattoo it on my arm, there’s no way I could cut back on KEXP.

You’re my role model Gina! I’m from Puerto Rico and I’m waiting to make my first visit to Seattle and to KEXP too. I’m glad you had a good time. Makes me even more excited about my trip.

She must have gotten coffee at Porchlight Coffee and Records on cap hill while here.
