Kelli Schaefer has a voice one could only describe as haunting. Akin to Sinead O’Connor, Shara Worden, or even Bjork at times (without the growl), her voice cuts through the air like a sword. It helps that Schaefer is also a fantastic songwriter, but her voice alone makes her performance at KEXP a memorable one.
Schaefer and her band hail from Portland. Her debut LP, Ghost of the Beast, is a healthy mixture of straightforward Portland indie rock that puts attention on hooks and odd, eclectic arrangements that allow Schaefer’s voice to dominate. Tunes like the title track and “Our Makeshift Gears Grind Gracefully” well attract fans of My Brightest Diamond, while “Black Dog” and “Sister K” will resound well with fans of Wild Flag and even the Dum Dum Girls. Schaefer recently posted a new track called “Giants” to her website and says that new tour dates will be posted fairly soon. Keep an eye out for a Seattle appearance and watch her performance at KEXP from last April below:
