Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased tracks, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Pulverized” by Wussy from the 2011 album Strawberry on Shake It Records.
Today’s featured song comes from and band who could very well be performing live on KEXP as you are reading this. Ohio rockers Wussy will be performing live on KEXP from Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop in Austin today, Wednesday, March 14, at 3:30 PM (1:30 PM on the West Coast). As you might have guessed, their name is somewhat ironic, as their music is replete with heavy riffage that goes well with the vocals of group founders Chuck Cleaver and Lisa Walker, who split the singing duties more or less evenly, both possessing the chops to carry a song without harmonizing accompaniment. Though the Cincinnati-based foursome know how to rock, the group was formed early in the 00s, and much of their music is indebted to 90s indie alt-rock. The wavering vocals and laid-back psychedelia of Strawberry‘s leadoff track, “Asteroids,” bring to mind early Flaming Lips. Today’s featured song, however — as its name indicates — brings the guitars and energy in full-force, and will certainly make for a riveting live performance in front of a packed Austin bike shop full of fans, or in whichever venue near you Wussy are due to stop at on their current tour.
As I mentioned, Wussy will be performing live on KEXP at 3:30 PM in Texas and 1:30 PM on the West Coast. Wednesday is only the first of three day’s of KEXP performances from Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop, however, so don’t forget to tune in Thursday and Friday to hear more exclusive performances from the likes of Tennis, Shearwater, Pickwick, Allen Stone, The War On Drugs, and more.
