Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “You and Me” by Detective Agency from their self-released EP Daggers.
This week is one of the holy grails for music lovers. Many fine folk from our fair city (and all over the world) are descending upon the streets of Austin, TX for SXSW, a week of over-indulging on food, booze, and new music. And one of those bands you hope to stumble upon during that hazy time between free tacos at the next party and free Lonestars at the previous one, is Seattle’s Detective Agency. Jangly guitars, surf/pop dreaminess, and just enough of an edge to break the skin. Though their sound is at first glance, sweet (along the same veins as Seapony), the ladies (and one gentleman) who make up Detective Agency list only two influences on their Facebook page: Velvet Underground and Beat Happening which should give you a hint of their darker territories.
Hope you had the chance to catch them this week while they’ve been in Austin. If not, keep an eye on their Bandcamp page for future dates.
